Writers: You’ll Thank Me Later

writer

So does writing success simply arrive overnight? Sometimes we watch in awe as a writer seems to have crawled out of the depths of nowhere, now claiming fame and fortune, but how did they get there? I can tell you right now that it didn’t just happen overnight, even though it may seem that way.

It takes work. Hard work. Success doesn’t simply happen overnight.

As a writer you need to dedicate yourself to your craft and keep at it – day after day, week after week. Sometimes it can even take years. But one aspect is certain: you will have dedication, or you will have regret – and a lot of it!

You need to dedicate time to writing every single day.

No matter how you feel, you need to be sitting at your computer, typewriter or notepad and churning those words out onto paper.

You may even have a gift for writing. It may come naturally, and you may look forward to it nearly every day. However, giftedness alone won’t earn you the writer’s life of your dreams – pure determination will.

Here are my top five tips for mastering your writing career:

5. Dedicate Time

As mentioned earlier, you need to dedicate time to writing every single day and make it a habit, regardless of how you feel. Simply get a few words on the screen and keep going. Your writing doesn’t need to be perfect from the moment you start; you only need to begin. You can set a timer if you want, but just make sure the time you dedicate is adequate and consistent.

4. Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

Keep in mind that simply practicing is not enough – you need to practice well.

Do you know someone who one day picked up a guitar and magical, entrancing melodies just struck your ears? I’m positive you don’t.

You’ll find them practicing at every chance they get to master their craft. The same is true for writers. Focus on habit-building and writing about topics you can’t get enough of. This will help the writing part become easy and stick.

3. Accept Failure

Failure is part of the learning process, and almost every writer I know has one or two monumental failures behind them. But they’ve taken it on the chin and learned from failure, not wallowed in self-doubt, giving up writing for good. They’ve soldiered on and achieved great success.

The same can be true for you – you must simply embrace the mistakes you’ve already encountered. Rather than try to hide from any pain or ego deflation, allow it to rebuild a stronger sense of self and carry you forward.

2. Motivation

Everybody needs some motivation to keep them going and you’ll need to find what motivates you. If it’s something too small it won’t work, and if it’s unachievable you’ll give up. Find what motivates you and stick with it. Having something to work towards will keep you on the right track.

1. Unleash Your Passion

It’s time to find and unleash your passion. What topics are you interested in? What rocks your boat? If you find your niche you’ll experience a deeper version of success. That being said, always try to push yourself out of your comfort zone too. It’s a good idea to challenge yourself with different projects that may not come naturally, but will grow your skill set immensely.

If you take this advice, you’ll be on your way to success sooner than you think. Do you have any ideas on how to be successful as a writer and make habits stick? I would love to hear from you below.
