8 Proven Steps To Make Your Writing Better

proven steps

As a writer, you’re constantly looking to make your writing resonate more deeply. If you’re focused on a blog, articles or other forms of “direct” copywriting, you’re also always looking to improve your call-to-action (CTAs).

Even if you’re already a talented copywriter, there is always room for improvement. You likely want to improve those conversion rates, improve newsletter signups and improve the content you want your readers to dive into, not merely skim.

If you want to improve your copywriting skills today, here are eight proven steps to make your writing better. Get ready to write copy that is great – copy that works!

8. Write To Only One Person

If you have no idea who you’re writing for, you’re in for an epic fail. This is one of the most important tips I can give you – please, write for one person! Picture that person – what they do, what they look like, what their passions are in life, what they are interested in and what they will get out of your blog post. This will make the writing a cinch. It will also help you stay focused the entire time!

7. Give Headlines 80 Percent Of Your Effort

This almost goes without saying, but in the words of the famous David Ogilvy, “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.” Writing good headlines takes practice. Look at other posts that you love – ask yourself what they did, how they did it and practice, practice, practice and practice some more. Test your headlines too and see which ones pull better reactions from your audience!

6. Pen A Story

Everyone loves a story. Open with a story that will have heads nodding in agreement at the beginning of your post, saying “Yes, I know how it feels… That’s me.”

The fact that people resonate with stories is an unchallenged and proven step, so if you get your storytelling right, you’re in for success. Telling great stories will help you get your point across in a meaningful and enticing way. They will draw those readers in who want to know more, and they’ll keep scrolling down the page. Voila, they are now reading your post since you’ve hooked them right at the beginning.

5. Ask Questions

Another great tactic to draw readers in is to ask a question. The reason that this works is because people are intrigued to find out what the answer is, have conversations about it and see whether it fits with their take on the issue at hand. Begin with a question and add your thoughts, and wait for responses to happen.

4. Physically Speak Your Words

When you’re really stuck, remove yourself promptly from your computer. Walk around the office, the house or wherever you are. Talk out loud about your post – you can even use a voice recorder if you want. Moving about and talking out loud will help you to put things into perspective and give you some new ideas.

3. Master And Share What You Know

Something may seem incredibly obvious to you, but you will be surprised it’s not incredibly obvious to everyone around you. Talk to people and pay attention to what they’re asking you and what they need to know. This can help you to develop your stories based on what you know people want to read about.

2. Study And Apply Your Favorites

If you’ve got some favorite authors and writers, study their writing. Dissect it, take it apart and try to emulate it. I’m not saying plagiarize their copy, but you can get some great inspiration from doing this exercise.

1. Perhaps The Most Overlooked Writing Tip Ever…

I’m not asking for you to kiss me – I’m asking you to keep it short and simple. If you want your readers to start falling asleep then ramble on with long sentences, long paragraphs, over the top words, and stuff your post with jargon. If you want them reading to the bottom of the page, simply KISS! (Keep It Simple, Silly!)

Hopefully these proven steps will help eliminate the blank stare and help turn your copy into great and memorable posts that will have readers loving and sharing your work.
